Description

A delicious recipe for Chocolate Chip Italian Cannoli, featuring crispy shells filled with a creamy ricotta mixture and chocolate chips.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 tablespoons sugar
  • 1 tablespoon unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 3 tablespoons unsalted butter (cubed)
  • 1 large egg yolk
  • 1/2 cup Marsala wine (or red wine)
  • 2 cups ricotta cheese (drained)
  • 1 cup powdered sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/4 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1 cup mini chocolate chips
  • 1 large egg (for sealing the shells)
  • Vegetable oil (for frying)

Instructions

  1. Cannoli Shells:
  2. Mix Dry Ingredients: Combine the flour, sugar, cocoa powder, and salt in a bowl.
  3. Add Butter: Mix in the butter cubes until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  4. Form Dough: Add the egg yolk and Marsala wine to form a dough. Knead until smooth.
  5. Chill: Wrap the dough in plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 1 hour.
  6. Roll and Cut: Roll out the dough to about 1/8 inch thick. Cut into circles (about 4-5 inches in diameter).
  7. Shape Shells: Wrap each circle around a metal cannoli tube, sealing edges with beaten egg.
  8. Fry: Heat vegetable oil in a deep fryer or large pot. Fry shells until golden brown. Remove from oil and let them drain on paper towels. Remove tubes once cooled.
  9. Filling:
  10. Mix Ingredients: In a mixing bowl, combine ricotta, powdered sugar, vanilla extract, and cinnamon. Stir until smooth.
  11. Add Chocolate Chips: Fold in the mini chocolate chips.
  12. Chill: Chill the filling for at least 30 minutes.
  13. Assembly:
  14. Fill Cannoli: Use a pastry bag to pipe the filling into the cooled cannoli shells.
  15. Decorate: Dip the ends in additional mini chocolate chips if desired.

Notes

  • Drain Ricotta: Ensure the ricotta is well-drained to avoid a runny filling.
  • Shells Storage: Store shells in an airtight container to keep them crispy.
  • Serve Fresh: Fill cannoli just before serving to prevent shells from becoming soggy.
  • Variations: Try adding nuts or candied fruit to the filling for additional texture and flavor.
