- 4 cups potatoes, sliced
- 2 cups ham, diced
- 1 medium onion, chopped
- 1 cup cheddar cheese, shredded
- 2 cups milk
- 1 cup heavy cream
- 3 tablespoons butter
- 3 tablespoons all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
- 1/2 teaspoon paprika
- Fresh parsley for garnish (optional)
Instructions
- Preheat the Oven: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
- Prepare Potatoes: Peel and slice the potatoes. Aim for thin, uniform slices for even cooking.
- Cook the Onion: In a large skillet, melt 1 tablespoon of butter over medium heat. Add the chopped onion and sauté until soft and translucent. Remove from heat.
- Make the Sauce: In the same skillet, melt the remaining 2 tablespoons of butter. Stir in the flour, cooking for about 1 minute. Gradually whisk in the milk and heavy cream, stirring constantly until the mixture thickens. Add the garlic powder, salt, pepper, and paprika. Continue stirring until well combined and smooth.
- Assemble the Casserole: In a greased baking dish, layer half of the sliced potatoes, half of the ham, half of the sautéed onions, and half of the cheese. Pour half of the sauce over the first layer. Repeat the layers with the remaining potatoes, ham, onions, cheese, and sauce.
- Bake: Cover with foil and bake in the preheated oven for 45 minutes. Remove the foil and bake for an additional 15-20 minutes, or until the potatoes are tender and the top is golden brown.
- Garnish: Optionally, sprinkle with fresh parsley before serving.
Notes
- For added flavor, consider adding a pinch of nutmeg to the sauce.
- If you prefer a crusty top, broil the casserole for a few minutes after baking.
- Leftovers can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
