Description
A classic and delicious red velvet cake with cream cheese frosting.

- 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 tbsp cocoa powder
- 2 cups granulated sugar
- 1 tsp baking powder
- 1 tsp baking soda
- 1/2 tsp salt
- 1 cup vegetable oil
- 1 cup buttermilk (or milk + 1 tbsp vinegar)
- 3 large eggs (room temperature)
- 2 tbsp red gel food coloring
- 2 tsp vanilla extract
- 8 oz cream cheese (softened)
- 1/2 cup unsalted butter (softened)
- 4 cups powdered sugar (sifted)
- 2 tsp vanilla extract
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and line two round cake pans.
- In one bowl, whisk together flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
- In another bowl, beat sugar and vegetable oil until fluffy. Add eggs one at a time, mixing well after each addition. Stir in buttermilk and vanilla extract.
- Mix in red food coloring until the desired shade is reached. Gradually add dry ingredients to wet ingredients; mix until just combined.
- Pour batter into prepared pans and bake for about 25-30 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean. Cool in pans for ten minutes before transferring to wire racks.
- For frosting, beat cream cheese and butter until smooth. Gradually add powdered sugar and vanilla; mix until creamy.
- Frost the cooled cake layers and assemble.
