Description

A classic and delicious red velvet cake with cream cheese frosting.


Ingredients

  • 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tbsp cocoa powder
  • 2 cups granulated sugar
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • 1 tsp baking soda
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1 cup vegetable oil
  • 1 cup buttermilk (or milk + 1 tbsp vinegar)
  • 3 large eggs (room temperature)
  • 2 tbsp red gel food coloring
  • 2 tsp vanilla extract
  • 8 oz cream cheese (softened)
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter (softened)
  • 4 cups powdered sugar (sifted)
  • 2 tsp vanilla extract

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and line two round cake pans.
  2. In one bowl, whisk together flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
  3. In another bowl, beat sugar and vegetable oil until fluffy. Add eggs one at a time, mixing well after each addition. Stir in buttermilk and vanilla extract.
  4. Mix in red food coloring until the desired shade is reached. Gradually add dry ingredients to wet ingredients; mix until just combined.
  5. Pour batter into prepared pans and bake for about 25-30 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean. Cool in pans for ten minutes before transferring to wire racks.
  6. For frosting, beat cream cheese and butter until smooth. Gradually add powdered sugar and vanilla; mix until creamy.
  7. Frost the cooled cake layers and assemble.
