Description

Delightful flaky pastries filled with caramelized apples and topped with a drizzle of caramel sauce.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 package puff pastry sheets (store-bought or homemade)
  • 2 large apples (Granny Smith or Honeycrisp work well)
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter
  • 1/2 cup heavy cream
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 1 egg (for egg wash)
  • 1 tablespoon water
  • Powdered sugar (for dusting)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Apples:
    • Peel, core, and slice the apples into thin wedges.
    • In a bowl, toss the apple slices with lemon juice and ground cinnamon. Set aside.
  2. Make the Caramel Sauce:
    • In a saucepan over medium heat, melt the sugar until it turns a golden-brown color. Do not stir, only swirl the pan occasionally.
    • Add the butter and stir until melted and combined.
    • Remove from heat and slowly whisk in the heavy cream until smooth. Let it cool slightly.
  3. Prepare the Pastry:
    • Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C).
    • Roll out the puff pastry sheets on a lightly floured surface. Cut into squares (about 4×4 inches).
    • Score a smaller square inside each pastry piece, being careful not to cut through the pastry.
  4. Assemble the Pastries:
    • Place the apple slices inside the scored square on each pastry piece.
    • Drizzle the caramel sauce over the apples.
  5. Bake:
    • Beat the egg with water to create an egg wash. Brush the edges of the pastries with the egg wash.
    • Place pastries on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
    • Bake for 15-20 minutes or until the pastry is golden brown and puffed.
  6. Finish and Serve:
    • Allow the pastries to cool slightly.
    • Dust with powdered sugar before serving.

Notes

  • Ensure the caramel sauce is not too hot when adding the cream to avoid splattering.
  • For added flavor, sprinkle a pinch of sea salt over the caramel apple mixture before baking.
  • Serve warm with a scoop of vanilla ice cream for an extra treat.
